Egg beats chicken in ultimate space race.
It’s the age old debate: which came first-the Chicken or the Egg? We decided there was only one way to settle it – by sending a rubber chicken and Eggbert, our adventurous mascot, to the edge of space with only a parachute and a high definition camera for company – to see who came back first.
After launching from a farmer’s field in Elsworth, Cambridgeshire attached to some weather balloons, the chicken and Eggbert rose to 33 kms – almost as high as record breaking space-jump dare-devil Felix Baumgartner – before their balloons burst and the race back down to earth began. Our ground crew tracked the intrepid astronauts’ GPS signals, chasing them down in a bright red Zipcar VW Golf, until they’d rescued the returning heroes.
This week hundreds of you chose to join either #teamchicken or #teamegg to urge on their heroes, with one lucky supporter winning a 1kg Lindt Gold Bunny in time for Easter. You can find out who won here.
When the results came in – Eggbert took the crown for all egg kind, landing in field in Brogborough, Milton Keynes about 80km east of Cambridge. The Chicken landed a short time later precariously perched atop a tree in Two Mile Ash, Bedfordshire.
