Melissa White for Zoffany

Melissa White is a decorative artist, hand painting interiors and specialising in Elizabethan wall painting. Whilst studying Art History and French at Birmingham University it was a hands-on apprenticeship in Tudor decoration that set White on her career path. White’s tutor was David Cutmore who has been extensively researching and reproducing Elizabethan wall paintings since the seventies, his curiosity sparked by a lack of information about these intriguing designs. They continue to seek out and reintroduce these stunning designs for private clients and for museums such as Shakespeare’s birthplace in Stratford. White’s home and studio are in Hastings on the Sussex coast where she works largely to commission, painting gorgeous patterns on both textiles for soft furnishings and fresco secco. For the latter, White has developed a signature style of cracking and ageing the surface for timeless appeal. In 2007 she was awarded a grant by The Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust (QEST) to carry out further research into Elizabethan painted decoration. It is through QEST that Zoffany invited White to design an Elizabethan inspired fabric and wallpaper collection called “Arden” which launches in March 2012. White also designs colourful and fun patchwork and lifestyle fabrics for Westminster Fibers.
