Heatwave hits Covent Garden
Covent Garden has seen a freak heatwave hit over the Easter bank holiday weekend, with temperatures soaring into the early twenties. Temperatures rivalled that of the Mediterranean as visitors to Covent Garden relaxed in the sunshine and enjoyed the Lindt Big Egg Hunt, supporting Action for Children.
Whilst the rest of the country was suffering from the aftermath of snow and temperatures around the freezing mark, the mercury in Covent Garden and the surrounding areas hit 21oC yesterday, making it officially the hottest place in the UK.
Andrew Harris, Director of Fundraising at Action for Children, said: “What an amazing weekend of weather for our Lindt Big Egg Hunt! I just can’t believe how lucky we have been. When we looked at the forecast at the beginning of the week we were worried it would be too cold for everyone, but it’s been a fantastic weekend, perfect for a spot of egg hunting!”
Meteorologists are currently looking into why the weather was so warm in Covent Garden as the rest of the country froze. First thoughts are that Covent Garden could have in fact been the epicentre of the cold weather spell. Experts are comparing the phenomenon to hurricanes, where people experience calm weather in the ‘eye’ or middle of the storm.
Andrew Harris, continued: “We really hope that the hot weather continues for the rest of the week as the Lindt Big Egg Hunt is on until Sunday 7 April, raising money for Action for Children. And we have a packed calendar of activities for families over the school holidays including a chance to meet some of the nation’s favourite children’s TV characters.”
